Friends of Humanity International Organization Statement

Withdrawing Citizenship from UAE citizens…
a big violation to be repealed

The government of the United Arab Emirates has withdrawn the citizenships of six Emirati citizens who are public figures in their homeland striving for better reforms. Depriving these citizens from their civil rights of citizenship is being considered an unprecedented step and an aggressive violation to the UAE commitments in the domain of human rights.
Since Friends of Humanity International Organization totally condemns this decision, it confirms that such decision is unauthorized or legalized locally or globally as it contradicts with the commitments of human and civil rights that can never been justified.

This unjustified Decision has targeted the following UAE citizens:
  • Ahmed Ghaith Al-Suwaidi
  • Hassan Munif Al Jabri
  • Hussein Munif Al Jabri
  • Dr. Shahin Abdullah Al Hosni
  • Dr. Ali Hussain Al Hammadi
  • Muhammad Abdul-Raziq As-Siddiq

Meanwhile, The UAE Official News Agency (WAM) has revealed via an official resource in the General Department of Citizenship, Residency and Ports that Shaikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of UAE, has issued a decree No. 2-1-7857 in December 4th 2011 that withdrew the UAE national citizenship from the above mentioned citizens due to their “involvement in dangerous activities against the Emirates Peace and Security”.
The statement declared that those citizens were engaged in actions that threat National Security and stability since years through their suspicious relationship with suspicious individuals and organizations that are enlisted in the UN black list of Combating Financing of Terrorism.
But, however, the enhancing impression uncovers that such a decision of depriving and withdrawing Citizenship comes as a punishment step against their Reforming Demands as well as their membership in an NGO ”Association for Reform and Social Guidance” whose doors were shut down by Authorities and its activities have been restricted. Relatively, some of those deprived citizens have filed some demands in a petition handed to the leadership of the UAE which asks for more legislative reforms and widening the authorities of the legislative in addition to calls for enhancing accountability, transparency and fighting of corruption.
Hence, The International Declaration of Human rights states in Article No. 15. "Every person has the right to have a citizenship and it is not authorized by anyway to deprive anybody or withdraw his/her national citizenship." Moreover, the United Nations Convention 1954 on stateless persons provides that "Authorities are not allowed to withdraw a citizenship from any citizen except when this person has another citizenship in another country." "The contracted state with such citizen is not allowed to decide denaturalization except by the order of law which grants every single citizen the right of fair trial before a court or another independent body." As well, the convention states: "It is not allowed to any authority to deprive or withdraw a national citizenship from any citizens due to ethnical, racial, religious or political causes." (Articles: 7, 8, 9).
Hereby, Friends of Humanity International asks the UAE Authorities to review this illegal decision that represents a big violation which can never been accepted or justified worldwide. The organization also calls upon the leadership of the UAE and president Shaikh Khalifa Bin Zaid Al Nahyan, his vice-president Shaikh Mohamed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum , the Federal Supreme Council of Emirates Governors and The federal government to quickly handle this abuse and cancel any unjustified decision issued in this regard that deprive UAE citizens from their national civil rights.
